Trolling Fishing - What is it and why is it banned in some areas ...

Fishing - the pastime of millions the world over

There are more people who fish (or people who have fished) in the world than partake in any other pastime or hobby. Fishing has mutated from beinig simply a means of putting food onto the table into a championship sport with local, national and international competitions. Despite that (or for some fishing fishermen, because of it) it is still enjoyed by millions the world over as a relaxing pastime, often in idylic surroundings. It can be enjoyed as easily solo as with a group of (not too rowdy) friends.

According to Wikipedia, techniques for catching fish include "hand gathering, spearing, netting, angling and trapping." The reality is that we are really talking about angling in this area, since when people talk about "going fishing" or being a fisherman in general conversation it is angling they are meaning, rather than manning a trawler in the mid-atlantic ocean. People who make a living from fishing or fish farming for public consumption probably number in the 10's or possibly low 100's of thousands (certainly less than 1 million) worldwide while those who enjoy fishing as a hobby / recreation / sport easily number into the 10's of millions!

There is a lot of science that goes into modern day fishing. Tackle companies spend millions of dollars annually to prove their product is better than anything else on the market. Along with that, there are just as many axioms on when the fish will or won't bite. "Never fish a West wind", " Fish a rising barometer" and others are things you hear from time to time. Most of those fisherman's guides had a basis in empirical observation once upon a time - in the loacl area where the phrase was coined, it was accurate. However if, for example, where you are fishing the wind blows from the west 357 days of the year it is unlikely that the motto "Never fish in a West wind" is one you are going to live by ...

On the pages in this area we will explore various aspects of fishing, including methods and equipment. We will start with a few basic items of equipment which can be easily overlooked when all the effort is concentrated on rods, reels, lines and lures. These are the items which take fishing from somewhere to go into the realms of a relaxing pastime. A simple item like a fishing chair can make or break a day's fishing. If you have a comfortable chair to relax in you will enjoy your day more having caught only one or two fish (or even nothing) than if you are sitting on a rock for 12 hours and have 4 fish to show for it. Believe me, I've done both. Of course, the ideal is a combination of the better parts of each scenario!
