Fishing Gloves - fingers or not?

There are numerous manufacturers who produce fishing gloves, or gloves which they market as fishing gloves. That latter may sound a small distinction but when it comes to using the right tool for the job it is far better to choose specialist fishing gloves than something which are actually general purpose glove / gardening glove / builder’s gloves rebadged as fishing gloves. Often the fishing glove will be the cheaper option aswell, since fishing glove manufacturers know that there are many, many items the average fisherman can spend his money on, and if fishing gloves are over-priced then the money will simply be diverted to new lures, a fishing chair or that nice new reel in the latest copy of fisherman’s weekly.

It is possible to find good quality fishing gloves priced anywhere from $15 - $20 dollars up to well over the $100 mark. The trick is to find the ones that suit both your purposes and your budget. If you are tying flies onto 2lb line you’ll need fingerless, while you want a well protected full hand glove when pulling Marlin out of the deep blue. “Horses for courses” applies here as much as it does in any field.

For preference choose a Kevlar palm with some form of sticky grip material layed over it. If possible, get one with reinforcement between the forefinger and thumb for a little added protection when working with taught leaders. If you intend filleting a lot of, consider chain-link fishing gloves – they may sound mediaeval, but actually are lightweight and usually just have a thin layer of stainless steel chain-link mesh layered in between the other materials to prevent the fisherman from slicing his hand open with that new lovely sharp filleting knife he got for Christmas.

Whichever manufacturer is ultimately chosen, make sure they offer the right combination of dexterity and protection for the circumstances in which they will be used. Remember the fishing gloves need to protect from the natural elements (water and weather), the fishing tackle (lines, leaders, hooks, knives etc) and possibly the fish themselves – depending on the nature of the catch.
