Fishing Chair - How to choose the right one
From “build it yourself” articles at wikihow on how to build a fishing chair out of rough lumber, to the most exclusive, electrically heated ice fishing chair, fishing chairs come in all shapes, sizes, qualities and of course prices. While your average folding chair or lawn chair can of course be pressed into service as a fishing chair, the fisherman who goes more than once or twice per year tends to prefer a dedicated seat for the purpose.
So what are the criteria you should apply when looking to purchase a fishing chair? First off has to be comfort. You (or the fisherman you are buying for) will be sitting in this chair for several hours at a stretch so a comfortable fishing chair has to be right up there at the top of the list. Size and weight come in a close second for most fishermen. If you fish close to your vehicle then they are of less importance, but if you have a hike of several miles up to your favourite river pool then every ounce matters - even at the expense of a little comfort. By the way, if you are buying for someone who solely a fly fisherman, then a fishing chair is a bad choice of gift, as they will spend 95% of their time on their feet. A light, folding fishing stool is all the fly fisherman generally requires for sitting on. It will only be used while eating lunch, drinking from the flask and possibly tying on a new fly - no point in taking anything bigger than a fishing stool in that case.
However, for the rest of the fishing fraternity (ledger, float, live bait and even spinning lures) a comfortable chair is the order of the day. For many a fisherman, fishing is about enjoying the weather, the scenery, the peace and quiet as it is about catching fish. Consequently his or her fishing chair has to reflect that. So remember, whether you choose a $10 dollar folding lawn chair or a $500 all-singing all-dancing ice fishing chair with heated seat and attached beer storage, aim for comfort, practicality and bear in mind how far this particular fishing chair will have to be carried.
